DSR Edu Kit On September 10, 2014 · In News, Projects ... . http://www.galileoteachers.org/dsr-edu-kit/ The Dark Skies Rangers (DSR) educational kits are getting a face-lift! With the advent of the International Year of Light in 2015 (IYL2015), these kits will morph into official IYL “Cosmic Light” cornerstone-themed “Quality Lighting Teaching Kits”. The United Nations-sanctioned IYL2015 is going to provide an opportunity to increase public awareness of quality lighting and energy conservation through efficient lighting design and practices. These kits will emphasise the use of proper optical design in achieving quality lighting that promotes both energy efficiency and energy conservation of an endangered natural resource, our dark skies. The proposed effort will leverage off of the preceding kit (the DSR or “Dark Skies and Energy Education” kits). The National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) has extensive experience in creating education programs in optics, illumination engineering and dark skies awareness. We will seek to increase public awareness of quality lighting issues through online tutorials, teaching kits, and hands-on activities. NOAO staff members who are experts in the development of kits and curricula for school, museums, pubic, and afterschool programs will lead the efforts. | Call for Proposals for Seed Money Support and/or Endorsement for Astronomical Cornerstone Programs for the International Year of Light
http://www.iau.org/iyl/proposals/
-----
Acting again without a vote, it adopted two draft resolutions — “Science, technology and innovation for development” and “International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, 2015” — contained in the Committee’s report on “Science and technology for development” (document A/68/440/Add.2).
General Assembly Distr.: General 12 February 2014
Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 20 December 2013 [on the report of the Second Committee (A/68/440/Add.2)] 68/221. International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, 2015
Considering also that technology and design can play an important role in the achievement of greater energy efficiency, in particular by limiting energy waste, and in the reduction of light pollution, which is key to the preservation of dark skies.

| Message Reçu de Rodrigo Alvarez: Dear colleagues, We will celebrate next year the International Year of Light 2015. The point of contact in Belgium is Prof. Hugo Thienpont (http://www.light2015.org/Home/About/Country/Belgium.html). Of course, astronomy-related activities fit perfectly in the framework of the IYL2015. The Outreach Coordinator of the IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach has recently asked me to help in coordinating the actors in astronomy who are willing to participate to the IYL2015. We have thus created a website dedicated to the subset of IYL2015 events related to astronomy. The work-in-progress website can be seen here: http://planetarium.be/IYL2015/ (the public website will benefit from a more direct address). This website can be used by you to post your events. The procedure to follow is: - You have to create an account by registering on the site (green link on the left) - The account is a contributor account: it will enable you to add your activities - To ward off spam, all activities will be validated by us (Gert Smet : gert.smet@planetarium.be) before appearing on the site - You can start registering and posting events on Monday the 22 nd, the website will be public on the second week of January. A press release will be issued end of January in order to promote the website and your activities. Even if the involvement of the IAU is less pronounced than in 2009 with the International Year of Astronomy, the IYL2015 is with no doubt a very exciting opportunity to bring the general public attention on astronomy. I look forward to any comment or suggestion. In the meantime, let me wish you a very pleasant holiday season. _________________ Nous sommes tous des poussières d'étoil...tchoummm...
